How to Nominate

Any government, institution, organisation, group or individual may submit nominations for the UNESCO Memory of the World Australian Register. However, priority will be given to nominations made by or through relevant heritage institutions and to Australian documentary heritage under threat. In addition, two or more governments, institutions, organisations, groups or individuals may put forward joint nominations where collections are divided among several owners or custodians. Such prior collaboration is strongly encouraged. The UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Committee also reserves the right to initiate nominations itself.

Why nominate an item or collection for the Australian Register?

  • Strategic opportunities (promotional and political) arising from right to use the high-status UNESCO Memory of the World logo
  • Prestige conferred on organisations and collections as a result of UNESCO’s recognition
  • Opportunities for increased public awareness
  • Strengthening arguments for sponsorship, grants and annual funding for preservation
  • Being part of the global effort to enhance awareness and support for the preservation of documentary heritage

When?

The nomination program operates biennially. The most recent nomination round opened on 30 November 2023 and the deadline for submissions is 30 June 2024.  Nominators will be advised of the outcome of the assessment of their nominations in December 2024 and successful nominators will receive their certificates of inscription at a ceremony in early 2025.
